A Fly-Fishing Paradise

The season kicks off in mid-April with steelhead and trout. The steelhead run until the end of May each season while the trout are very active until the end of July, or the beginning of the salmon run in a particular river. The sockeye salmon start their migration in early to mid-June in two of the river systems and stay until the first part of August. Chum salmon and silver salmon start running in the first week of July and are in the rivers for the remainder of the guiding season. Pink salmon move into the rivers in July and stay throughout the summer.

Salmon on the island are very aggressive and with the proper flies, these fish will bite. Although they are no longer feeding once they are in the fresh water, these salmon strike out of aggression. Once you have one hooked up, hold on! They are very fast and powerful. Regardless of how they bite, we think you will enjoy catching them as much as we do.

Top anglers in the sport of fly-fishing believe steelhead to be one of the five most difficult fish in the world to catch on fly. Steelhead are known for their blistering runs, astonishing leaps, and an endurance matched by few fish. Because of the skill involved in catching these fish, steelhead are considered to be a stepping-stone in every angler's career. With the right fly's, good casting and a little patience you will be catching and releasing beautiful chrome bright fish in no time.

Whether you are an experienced steelhead fisherman or ready to try it for the first time, Prince of Wales is an excellent place to experience the thrills of one steelhead after another. Not only is the fishing superb in our area, but you will have it all to yourself. Generally we won't see another person all day, which is hard to find in the sport of steelheading.

For those of you who don't have any fly fishing experience, we do provide lessons at no additional charge. Each of our guides is a professional fly-casting instructor. A lesson will usually have you casting well enough to catch and land fish in approximately 45 minutes. As the day goes on you will continue to get better, and by the end of your stay, you should feel confident fishing for just about anything anywhere on fly.

Steamboat Bay Resort provides fly-in and ground transportation to and from the streams. We also provide 8', 10', 14', and 18' catamaran boats with motors for our float trips. These boats and our private lodge plane allow us to access the most remote parts of the island.

We also offer a combination fly and float trip. You will begin your day by flying into a remote lake where you will fish for trout. After a bit, we will load up into the pontoon boats and float down one of the largest river systems on the island. Depending on the time of the year, we will be fishing for three types of trout and salmon throughout the trip. We will stop for lunch at a remote setting and then continue onto the lower elevation where our staff will pick you up and bring you back to the lodge in time for appetizers and refreshments.

We can outfit groups of up to 16 people with waders, boots, fly rods, flies, leader, etc. We provide high quality Orvis brand equipment for your group. The waders are all breathable material and the boots are felt bottom river wading shoes. We have an assortment of fly rods, light spinning rods and heavy spinning rods to accommodate your different needs.
