Explore a WonderlandThere are thousands of picturesque places on the island to discover and explore: mountain vistas, cascading 100' waterfalls and numerous high points from which to view the inlets and islands surrounding Noyes Island. The rivers and streams on the island are very special. The water is clean and clear due to the short distance that it must travel to the ocean. We like to refer to it as gin clear. You can step right up to a pool and look straight down into 10 feet of water and see hundreds of salmon right below your feet. Simply incredible! The climate on the island during the summer is surprisingly warm, considering that we are so far north and located right on the water. Temperatures in June average approximately 55 to 70 degrees, while July and August are generally 60 to 75 degrees. One of the popular benefits of the cool temperatures in our area is that there are very few mosquitoes! Incredible FishingThis area boasts some of the best fishing in Southeast Alaska - according to fish and game. The fishing is so good here that the island has been nicknamed "Monster Island," due to the plentiful large king salmon population that migrates through this area annually. Another reason for the consistently outstanding fishing is the increasingly productive hatchery programs located up and down the entire west coast. For each successful season these hatcheries have, they double the total number of fish they release the following year. When you combine the hatchery fish with the dominant wild run of salmon in our area, it produces a winning combination for everyone. This is what makes our area consistently the most productive spot in Alaska. According to Fish and Game statistics and hatchery output numbers, the coming summer migrations are going to keep getting bigger and better. "The future is bright on Noyes Island." The Perfect LocationSteamboat Bay is rich with history, culture, and natural beauty. As one of the best moorages on the west coast of Southeast Alaska, Steamboat was an important strategic location for fishermen and cannery workers alike. The New England Fish Co. built the cannery in the early 1900's out of large Douglas fir beams imported from Oregon, and employed the hard work of many men. When the cannery was at its height, over 300 people lived and worked there. Today the cannery buildings stand tall and their most frequent guests over the past 25 years have been local wolves, deer, eagles, otters, and whales. Join us as we re-open this premier location not only to fishermen, but to all who want to experience this special place. We offer alternative activities at our resort that include kayaking, sight seeing, whale watching, nature hikes, and health retreats. Steamboat Bay is the best location to experience the charms of Alaska both yesterday and today. |
